New Server

We did it. We reached the goal of $900 for a new server to host Raspberry World on. If you tried to access the site Thursday night (1/5/11), you may have noticed the site was down – that was me backing up the old server and migrating it to the new one.

Georgie wanted me to let you know what we got for the money:

  • 2010 MacMini, running SnowLeopard Server. I had an opportunity to test Lion Server, but found that the lack of controls offered would cause the length of the migration to be unacceptable. Unfortunately it’s next to impossible to put SnowLeopard Server on the latest hardware – but luckily Apple had some of the previous generation available.
  • HWD Media Share, which is the latest video gallery system that Raspberry World been using for the past few months, which I hope has made things easier for the sharing of your favorite clips.
  • Similarly, we also acquired JMS Music around the same time which has allowed the uploading and management of mp3 files.
Hopefully you find the new server, and all the new features, an improvement to the site. If there are any technical issues you come across, let me know at webmaster@raspberryworld.net.

One last technical note, the bandwidth to and from the server is still going to be an issue. I’m continually on the look out for better service options, but our current ISP is one of the few that proudly boasts no data caps, offers static addresses and has only had a couple hours of downtime in the 7 years I’ve been using them (all the other downtime have been issues on my end).

While the donation thermometer may be gone, we still have a PayPal link for donations – if you wish to help out with the monthly costs of hosting Raspberry World.

Thank you.
