Freshly dug, warm and humid in the sun. It brings life as men and women work the land to feed the hungry.

Freshly dug, cold and clammy in the moonlight. It brings death as one man releases his broken and bloody burden. A ragdoll tumbles down into the shallow grave, silky brown hair lank and filthy.

He tastes its bitterness as the crushing weight increases. A muffled gunshot rings out before unconsciousness returns. Eternity passes. Soft lips against his, forcing air into his starved lungs. Then words in a familiar voice complete him.

“Napoleon, you’re safe now.”
