1,001 Movies – Week 41

“Cronos” to “Cry Freedom”

Cronos (1992) – An elderly antiques dealer accidentally activates the Cronos Device, an instrument which grants eternal life but at a great cost – it turns the person into a vampire. Though, in this Guillermo Del Toro film, the vampires are of a non-traditional kind. This film is one of those that sticks with you long after you’ve seen it. (GS)

Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon (2000) – This brought magic back to “Kung Fu” movies, with a story that made it accessible to Western audiences (and I don’t mean cowboy fans).  I bought this one! (KCL)

The Crow (1994) – Future noir; and if it ain’t, it oughta be. I saw this several times in the theater, because I couldn’t believe how good it was. So many familiar elements, yet so different; a very human and likable story of wrath and vengeance. If Brandon Lee had lived, he could have taken over the world after this one.  (KCL)

The Cruel Sea (1953) – Realistic, tense and admirably balanced view of the pressures of Royal Navy life during WWII based on the classic Nicholas Monsarrat novel. Stellar performances from Jack Hawkins, Donald Sinden, Denholm Elliott, Stanley Baker. (KT)

Cry Freedom (1987) – Well acted true story of Donald Woods (Kevin Kline) as chief editor of the Daily Dispatch, a liberal South African newspaper and his friendship with revolutionary Steven Biko (Denzel Washington).  A strong look at discrimination and politics in South Africa.  This is an extremely thought provoking film which should be seen by everyone.
